Slow fashion and sustainability: fashion according to Lanaioli

For us, slow fashion means buying less and better: garments made from natural fibers, short-supply-chain merino wool from Controra's Sopravissana sheep, certified regenerated cashmere, the hands of Italian artisans, and a repair service to make them last for years.

The history of Italian Lanaioli: a craft dating back centuries

In 14th-century Florence, the Lanaioli were members of the Guild of the Woolmakers. The guild brought together wool owners and workers, from selection through carding and combing, all the way to spinning and the production of clothing and household textiles.

In those years, power in Florence lay in the hands of the guilds, and the Guild of the Woolmakers was the most influential: it made a decisive contribution to the city's economic growth and supplied up to 10% of the wool needs of the entire Western world at the time.

The rediscovery of 100% Made in Italy craftsmanship

Our journey starts again here: in Italy, some manufacturing skills have survived and indeed grown stronger, cultivated over the centuries from the medieval guilds to the present day.

Producing high-quality textile goods necessarily requires a craft tradition that, in Italy, has ancient roots.

Lanaioli quality craftsmanship 100% Made in Italy care and attention to detail

In a world of mass production and standardized quality, our project puts people and their expertise at the center: the technical skill and attention to detail that only artisan production can provide, compared with the large volumes produced by industrial machines.

We provide the people who work on our garments with carefully selected yarns from the finest Italian producers. Discover who our artisans are.

Quality and attention to detail, without compromise

For us, the quality of the workmanship and raw materials is non-negotiable: it is a choice on which we will not compromise.

Our focus on craftsmanship brings us back to the idea of homo faber: the artisan capable of a creative effort that brings a high-quality garment to life, as well as the person who shapes their own destiny.

Regenerated yarns for sustainable fashion

From the very beginning, we wanted not only to run a business, but also to be part of the change in our industry. That is why we launched a collection of garments made with regenerated yarns. Since 2026, our regenerated cashmere has been a GRS-certified Re.Verso™ yarn, produced by Filpucci in Campi Bisenzio (FI): discover how it is made.

Lanaioli Regenerated Cashmere for sustainable and ethical fashion

Only natural fibers to reduce environmental impact

Cashmere is the finest of the yarns we use to make our garments. For those who pay closer attention to the environment, we created a line in 100% regenerated cashmere from the outset, with quality in no way inferior to pure cashmere.

For our other natural yarns, since 2026 we have been working with Maeko Tessuti in Quaregna Cerreto (BI).

Short-supply-chain merino wool from Sopravissana sheep

For us, sustainability does not stop at recycling. Our short merino wool supply chain starts at Controra, the farm owned by one of Lanaioli's partners in Norma (LT), in the Lepini Mountains. It raises around 70 Sopravissana sheep, a merino-cross breed from central Italy that is at risk of extinction.

Italian wool production declined over the years until it nearly disappeared: merino wool mainly comes from Australia, while cashmere comes from regions between India, Pakistan, and Central Asia. We are taking the opposite approach: every May, Controra's sheep are sheared, and the wool is washed, carded, and spun by Lanatura Filati in Pedemonte (VI), to become Italian knitwear.

Buy less, make it last longer

A sustainable garment is first and foremost one that lasts. That is why we offer a tailoring repair service for garments that need it.

With the Second Hand First Choice collection, we give already-worn garments a second life.

Our vision: less resource waste, sustainable and ethical fashion

The savings in water, energy, fuel, and CO2 emissions associated with every stage of producing and transporting a garment would be enormous. We too want to contribute to this change.

Lanaioli reducing environmental impact, ethics and sustainability in clothing production

We want our customers to be co-protagonists in a project whose goals are dignified work, the conservation of natural resources, and the revival of true Made in Italy, from raw materials to finished product.

We share our culture and values

Lanaioli wants to continue and expand the vision of the founders of the ancient Guild of the Woolmakers.

We believe in a business built on responsible choices, where values, people, and the environment come before business. Read more about our philosophy.
